Preventing Dengue and Malaria

This year, over 11,000 primary students at 39 schools in Nicaragua learned about how to prevent dengue and malaria, two diseases that are among the most common and dangerous for Nicaragua’s impoverished children. ANF and Fundacion Coen came together to bring this educational campaign to six of Nicaragua’s 15 departments in order to give these 11,000 students the chance to continue their education unperturbed by disease.

Many of the students who participate in the educational campaign against dengue and malaria have never been taught the importance of keeping their homes clean and free of insects or to wash their hands. This, coupled with their disheartening lack of access to quality healthcare, can lead to dangerous health situations for children at a very young age.

The first day of the campaign, children and their family members receive lectures by teachers trained on the importance of preventing dengue and malaria and how techniques personalized to the needs of the families who lives near the school. The remaining days of the campaign students take part in creative activities related to the topics at hand and are given a chance to do a total cleanup of their school on the last day.

At the end of the campaign, three winning schools are chosen for their dedication and creativity in carrying out the educational campaign. As a prize, each school is given funds to better their school’s sanitation.
