Each year, ANF and its partners launch a one-week-long educational campaign throughout Nicaragua aimed at teaching children of impoverished schools the importance of washing their hands and the techniques they can use to prevent illnesses.
In 2009, 107 schools participated in the hand-washing campaign, benefiting over 22,000 children. During the week of the campaign, teachers and family members carry out creative and fun activities with the students that relate to hand-washing and disease prevention. All around the country, songs are written, videos are watched, coloring books are filled, and plays are put on– all conveying the importance of keeping one’s hands clean to staying healthy.
For students who have never been taught to wash their hands before a meal or after playing with their pet, this short educational campaign really makes an impact in the behaviors and habits these children will grow up with.
